Why Is My AC Not Cooling?

The 7 most common reasons your AC is blowing warm air — and which parts usually fix the issue.

If your AC is running but not cooling, work through this list before calling a tech. Most issues come down to a handful of cheap, replaceable parts.

1. Dirty air filter

A clogged filter chokes airflow across the evaporator coil, freezing it solid. Check and replace your filter monthly during cooling season.

2. Tripped breaker or blown fuse

Check the breaker panel and the outdoor disconnect. Repeated tripping suggests a deeper electrical issue.

3. Failed capacitor

A humming unit that won't start almost always means a bad capacitor. Cheap and quick to replace — see our capacitor replacement guide.

4. Burned-out contactor

If the outdoor unit isn't getting power despite a working thermostat, the contactor is often the culprit.

5. Low refrigerant

Low refrigerant points to a leak — this is a job for a licensed HVAC tech, not a DIY repair.

6. Frozen evaporator coil

Caused by restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Shut the system off and let it thaw before troubleshooting.

7. Failed condenser fan motor

If the outdoor fan isn't spinning but the compressor hums, you likely need a new fan motor or capacitor.
